Program Overview

Sustainable Education and Leadership for Africa Fellowship (SELA), is a program under the African Youth Mentorship Project, the maiden project of Primacy Youth Development Initiative. This fellowship is designed to equip emerging African leaders who are passionate about sustainable development and leadership in their communities with the skills that they need to start solving the challenges faced by Africans. The fellowship will also support fellows to carry out an outreach project to a secondary school in their community.
The fellowship focuses on various sustainability topics, and thematic areas every year. The thematic area of Focus for 2024 is:
Environmental sustainability.

Why be a SELA Fellow?

SELA will bring fellows from African countries under one platform to learn, network, collaborate and grow while holding each other’s hand. SELA fellows will:

  • Engage in a comprehensive program covering climate entrepreneurship, renewable energy, environmental impacts, and geographic information systems.
  • Receive mentorship and guidance from experts in the field of sustainable development.
  • Gain firsthand experience in carrying out an Outreach project which will impact students in secondary schools within your community.
  • Learn how to effectively manage projects.
  • Join a vibrant network of like-minded individuals committed to making a difference in their communities.
  • Collaborate with other fellows.
  • Gain practical skills and insights to implement sustainable initiatives in their respective regions.
  • Earn a certificate of completion upon successfully finishing the fellowship program.
  • Get a chance to be paired for internship opportunities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 to 35 years old by December 2024.
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to driving positive social and environmental change.
  • Have proficiency in English.
  • Possess leadership potential and a desire to contribute to the sustainable development of Africa.
  • Be a resident of any African country.

Program Commitment

Fellows are expected to:

  • Fully participate in the fellowship program, which includes: virtual sessions, assignments, and outreach projects to be eligible to receive a certificate of graduation.
  • Commit 8-10 hours weekly for the 3 months during the fellowship.
  • Maintain regular communication with program organizers and fellow participants.
  • Participate in surveys and feedback after the program.

Technical Requirements and Accessibility

  • The Sustainable Education and Leadership for Africa Fellowship will be conducted virtually. Fellows will need access to a computer or mobile device with internet connectivity to participate in online sessions and activities.

Program Dates

The 2024 fellowship will be conducted in 2 Cohorts:

Cohort 1: April 13th to June 29th (application opens on the 4th of March)
Cohort 2: August 3rd to October 19th

Instructions

  • Applications must be submitted in English by July 31st at 11:59 pm GMT.
  • Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the program details and submit their applications on time.
  • Upon selection, the fellow will be required to attend all sessions to be eligible for the certificate. One may miss only two with a good reasonable cause.

What happens after I apply?

Finalists will be notified 1 week before the commencement of the cohort. Successful applicants will receive further instructions on the next steps of the fellowship program.
